Guest house grandfather clock sells for £400,000

A grandfather clock that was a conversation piece in Lake District guest house turned-out to be a rare example that has sold for more than £400,000.

The ebony veneer "long clock" was made in London around 1670 by Dutch-born Ahasuerus Fromanteel, who built the first-ever precise pendulum clocks in England.

It went into a sale at Bonhams auction rooms in London with an estimate of up to £150,000 but went under the hammer for £400,800, to an un-named collector.

Bonhams sold the timepiece on behalf of the owners of a Lakeland guest house where it arrived after spending 100 years measuring time at a house in rural France.

Despite its travels the 5ft 9inch tall clock is in fine, original condition with the ebony veneered case intact along and with exquisite mouldings to the hood, trunk and sides.

A Bonhams spokesman said: "Without doubt, had this clock been known to the great horological historians of the past, it would have featured in many of the standard reference works and exhibitions as a wonderful, largely untouched, example of the formative years of the English pendulum clock.

"The clock recently returned to the UK having graced a family home in the South of France since around the time of the second World War.

"The vendors family have their roots in the North of England and inside the hood, written in pencil at the back of the tympanum is "W Rogers, Cook St. L'pool, July 1885, JW"

James Stratton, Head of Bonhams Clock Department says: "This is a fantastic result. This clock was made while the ashes from the great fire of London were still cooling.

"Impeccable provenance, rarity and immaculate construction all make this a collector?s piece and a fantastic investment.

"The best of the best will continue to demand a premium price - which has proven to be the story of this recession.

"The estimate of £100,000 - £150,000 paid tribute to the lot?s historical value but even we were surprised by the level of interest.

"Without doubt, had this clock been known to the great horological historians of the past, it would have featured in many of the standard reference works and exhibitions as a wonderful, largely untouched, example of the formative years of the English pendulum clock."

Historic records show that the Fromanteel family produced the first pendulum clocks in England, following the visit of Fromanteel?s son John to Holland.

He learned to make the new-style clocks from Salomon Coster who had an agreement with Christiaan Huygens to use his orignal idea.

It meant clocks had became accurate enough to have minute hands for the first time.

Cops take kids Christmas shopping

More than 125 local children, armed with police escorts, converged on Walmart on Saturday morning looking for the perfect toy during the Bullhead City Police Department's annual Shop with a Cop.

The program, now in its 14th year, allows children to be paired up with a police officer for a morning of shopping, buying toys, clothes and music for themselves or for their families. Children selected for the program are nominated by their school teachers and approved by school administrators. Participants need to be on the free and reduced lunch program in order to be nominated.

Scott Steele, president of the Bullhead City Police Officer's Association which sponsors the program, said the event is always a success.

“It's a memorable morning for not only the kids, the officers look forward to this event as well,” Steele said. “It is a way to interact with children on a different level since a lot of them see us while we are working and are scared of us. The program gives kids a positive experience with us.”

The officers assist the child with picking out the items they'd like to purchase and keeping a running total of the amount. Each child is given a $100 gift card to spend.

“I want video games, like a racing game and gun games,” said 7-year-old Carson Rac.

Walmart not only provides extra staff for the event, but also pays the sales tax for the items. It's an event staff say they love.

“Shop with a Cop is an event we at Walmart look forward to every year,” said co-manager Dale Westrom. “We're glad to be part of it.”

Before going to Walmart, the children and officers ate a complete pancake breakfast at the Elks Lodge.

“I only ate my sausage,” said Blythe Holloway, 7.

Shop with a Cop is made possible by donations from community groups, businesses and individuals.

In addition to the Bullhead City Police Department, members from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue, Fort Mojave Tribal Police Department, the Mohave County Constable's Office, California Highway Patrol, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Arizona Game and Fish, Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Department of Wildlife and the National Parks Service participated in the event.

Christmas Shopping, use internet, not high street
Shoppers should avoid the high street and head to the internet if they want to cut their Christmas shopping bill by hundreds of pounds, a leading watchdog has found.
Presents, including books, perfumes, CDs and toys, are on average 17 per cent cheaper from internet retailers than from high street shops, according to Which?.
The consumer watchdog researched the price of 28 of the most popular gifts and compared the standard high street price – looking at a wide range of shops, both national chains and independents – and compared with the cheapest online price.
Just one item, a Blu-ray DVD player, was cheaper on the high street and that was at an independent shop. All the other goods, from Calvin Klein perfume, Antony Beevor's latest history book The Battle for Normandy, a DVD of The Boat that Rocks, to Star Wars Lego and a Barbie doll were all cheaper on the web, sometimes significantly so. The online price included the cost of delivery.

The Which? report did make clear that shoppers who preferred to visit shops, rather than sit at their computer, to do their shopping, could track down bargains – but only if they did their research. While the average price for DVDs and books on the high street was more expensive than on the internet.

Come Winter, Come!

Style is a dicey affair. The need to conform to the rules laid down by a nebulous group can be maddening, especially if you’re the kind of person who would much rather wear faded pyjamas outdoors if you could just get away with it.

But the good thing is that it’s possible to fit the bill when it comes to style while enjoying it at the same time. Come winter and clothing sees a sea change. There might not be snow or frostbite, but cold and chills can be equally threatening.

Pack away your flimsy cotton capris, spaghetti straps (unless you plan to use them as padding) and flip-flops. Cold weather doesn’t necessarily imply dull shawls and depressingly dark jackets. This season’s canon is colour, and the brighter the better.

It’s only November but the bounty is spilling out of stores. Shrugs, misconstrued by many as temporary garments that only hide too much skin or curves, have stepped up as the newest must-haves.

Jackets are also seeing new styles this season. The typical sporty jacket that you pull over T-shirts and kurtas comes in greens, purples and yellows apart from the standard greys and whites. Woollen jackets are also widely available: thick, soft material in cutesy colours, both thigh-length and to the waist, with whimsical tassels and floppy bows to soften the overall look. They might be slightly heavy on the pocket but they keep you snug.

Snowboarding Goggles

In the sport of Snowboarding, a reliable pair of Snowboard Goggles is a necessity. It is as important as with other vital pieces of Snowboarding Equipment like Snowboarding Boots, Snowboard Helmets, Snowboard Jackets, and gloves.

Each person engaged in Snowboarding must see to it that he is using a good pair of goggles before doing any Snowboarding stint and especially when doing advanced practices which entail great danger. Riding the board and seeing the path would be a lot easier by using high quality Snow Goggles-in fact, without them, it would be impossible neither to ride nor to see at all.

In terms of lens color, orange- and yellow-colored lenses could go well with any situation. These colors block out the harmful intense sun's rays and at the same time, give a small amount of additional contrast in low light. It should also be remembered that dark tints are only handy on excessively bright days, while clear lenses are good when snowboarding at night.

Snowboarding Goggles protect the eyes from destructive sun's rays seen either from the sky or from the sun's reflection on the snow. Snow and wind are also blocked by goggles, hence making the ride faster and safer.

Seeing sideways is also improved with the use of goggles. Snowboarding Goggles provide a better peripheral vision. In addition, since Snowboarding involves riding sideways, a perfect sideway visualization is important.

When buying the superior Snowboard Goggles, the perfect fit must be attained. Only with such ideal match can the goggles' effectiveness and usability be measured and maximized. Goggles must be proportional to the contour of the snowboarder's face to get a great seal and protection from the harmful elements. There should be no gaps to prevent air from leaking inside. If you are riding with a helmet, it is critical for the goggles to fit well with the helmet. It is then advisable to consider using brands which make helmet-specific goggles that are particularly designed to fit within the frames of a helmet. These goggles oftentimes come with longer straps, which can cover the helmet's perimeter. For more convenience, buckle attachments are also provided.

There are a lot of things to consider when buying Snowboarding Goggles. Keep these guidelines in mind so it will be easier to choose the right pair of Snow Goggles for you.

Microsoft Vista Tips

Whether it’s having some extra power to keep your framerate down in Half Life 2, or simply getting Windows Vista to shut down that second faster, everybody wants a quicker computer.

Because of this, we’ve prepared affordable idea’s to achieve this. Here’s the first batch.

Boredom leads to cheating, leads to lying and leads to losing something good.

Boredom is an emotional state experienced during periods lacking activity or when individuals are uninterested in the opportunities surrounding them.

Causes and Effects

Although it has not been widely studied, research on boredom suggests that boredom is a major factor impacting diverse areas of a person's life. Noob People ranked low on a boredom-proneness scale were found to have better performance in a wide variety of aspects of their lives, including career, education, and autonomy. Boredom can be a symptom of clinical depression Boredom can be a form of learned helplessness a phenomenon closely related to depression. Some philosophies of parenting propose that if children are raised in an environment devoid of stimuli, and are not allowed or encouraged to interact with their environment, they will fail to develop the mental capacities to do so.

In a learning environment, a common cause of boredom is lack of understanding; for instance, if one is not following or connecting to the material in a class or lecture, it will usually seem boring. However, the opposite can also be true; something that is too easily understood, simple or transparent, can also be boring. Boredom is often inversely related to learning, and in school it may be a sign that a student is not challenged enough, or too challenged. An activity that is predictable to the students is likely to bore them.

A study of 1989 indicated that an individuals impression of boredom may be influenced by the individuals degree of attention, as a higher acoustic level of distraction from the environment correlated with higher reportings of boredom.

Boredom has been studied as being related to drug abuse among teens. Boredom has been proposed as a cause of pathological gambling behavior. A study found results consistent with the hypothesis that pathological gamblers seek stimulation to avoid states of boredom and depression.

My Favourate Brand

A brand is a collection of experiences and associations connected with a service, a person or any other entity.
Brands have become increasingly important components of culture and the economy, now being described as Cultural accessories and personal Philosophies.
Some people distinguish the psychological aspect of a brand from the experiential aspect. The experiential aspect consists of the sum of all points of contact with the brand and is known as the brand experience. The psychological aspect, sometimes referred to as the brand image, is a symbolic construct created within the minds of people and consists of all the information and expectations associated with a product or service.

About Oakley

Founded in 1975 and headquartered in Southern California, the company’s optics brand portfolio includes Eye Safety Systems, Fox Racing, Mosley Tribes, Oakley, Oliver Peoples, and Paul Smith Spectacles.

Oakley blends science and art to redefine product categories by rejecting the constraints of conventional ideas. The company is recognized as one of the most coveted brands in performance technology and fashion. Its icon is embraced by the global culture of sport competitors who define their own lifestyle, the world class athletes who exceed the limits of possibility. In its devotion to these athletes, Oakley does the same.

Decades of Oakley innovation have led to a full array of market-leading products including performance apparel and accessories, prescription eyewear, footwear, watches and electronics. The company continues to build on its heritage of authenticity by reinventing products from scratch to achieve superior quality and genuine innovation that delivers the unexpected. Awarded more than 575 patents and 1100 trademarks, Oakley today is a global icon offering products to consumers in more than 100 countries.

Sunglasses

As the undisputed leader in performance eyewear, Oakley continues to advance sport technology and redefine the lifestyle market with patented optical innovations. Numerous patents have been awarded to the inventions behind the company’s High Definition Optics. HDO virtually eliminates the problems of ordinary lenses, including distortion that bends light (so objects aren’t really where they appear to be) and optical flaws that magnify images in the manner of prescription lenses made for somebody else.

Eyewear is their passion.Oakley has led the way in maximizing lens style and technical performance. Right now, it’s only getting better for the consumer. Oakley polarized lenses are engineered with a liquid infusion process that bonds the polarizing filter at the molecular level, eliminating the haze and distortion found in conventional technologies.

Below are seven exclusive Oakley technologies that put polarized lenses.

  • High Definition Optics – All Oakley polarized lenses utilize, a collection of technologies that include patented innovations for unbeatable optical clarity and performance.
  • Axis of Polarization – The orientation of the polarizing filter is critical for performance, so Oakley polarized lenses maintain the uncompromising precision of EN1836 standards.
  • Infusion Moulding – The lens material bonds to the polarizing filter at the molecular level to eliminate haze and distortion.
  • Lens Colours – Match the optics to environment by choosing from a spectrum of optional lens tints.
  • Polarized Emission – This measure of polarization efficiency exceeds 99% in Oakley polarized lenses, a performance level unsurpassed in the industry.
  • Impact Resistance – Oakley performance eyewear meets all impact resistance standards of the American National Standards Institute.
  • Hydrophobic – Oakley Hydrophobic technology helps keep vision clear and sharp by preventing water build-up and repelling oils and contaminants.

Sports categories that rely on Oakley goggle technology include motocross, snowboarding, skiing, BMX and mountain biking. Launched in 2006, OAKLEY STOCKHOLM was created specifically to offer women the ultimate in goggle performance technology. The company’s 3D cranial geometry ensures a precise fit, and innovations such as ram-air surge ports provide fog-cutting airflow that is augmented with F3 anti-fog coating. Optically correct Oakley goggle lenses are engineered to maximize peripheral and downward vision while optimizing impact protection. In addition, a legacy of decades in motocross has resulted in the most optically advanced tear-off system in the industry.

Watches

Oakley entered the wristwatch market years ago with an invention called the O ENGINE, an innovation that allows an INERTIAL GENERATOR to convert motion into electricity. Today, the company produces a full array of timekeeping instruments including OAKLEY MINUTE MACHINE, a Swiss-made chronograph with 13-jewel movement and the ability to measure cumulative time, intermediate time and split time. Known for exquisite dimensional sculptures of lightweight titanium and surgical grade stainless steel, Oakley’s quartz/analogue line blends definitive styling with the precision of Swiss movement. Innovations like the company’s GMT wristwatch offer premium features such as the ability to set local time anywhere on earth by adjusting a World City hand.

Disney Princess

Disney Princess

Disney Princess is a Walt Disney Company franchise, based on fictional characters who have been featured as part of the Disney character line-up. The main eight are: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, and Pocahontas. Disney recently announced that new Princesses would be added: Princess Tiana, from their 2009 animated feature The Princess and the Frog, will join the ranks of Disney Princesses and also Rapunzel from the computer animated film. The franchise has released dolls, Disney Princess Bikes, and a variety of other children’s products, apparel, and even band-aids featuring the Disney Princesses.

The princesses to be featured in the line were chosen from classic Disney films. The characters were not chosen specifically for their royal titles, but rather for how well they fit into what Disney executives deemed “the Princess mythology.” Mulan is an example of this concept; she has no familial ties to royalty, but is still included in the character list. Tinker Bell was once included under the same principle before it was decided she was not suited for the “mythology.” She now stars in her own Disney franchise, the Disney Fairies.

Andila stock a range of Disney Princess Bikes, Disney Princess Scooters, Disney Princess Skates and Disney Princess Bicycle Accessories.

Andila Shopping from Home Disney

Disney

From the very beginning, Disney's founder Walter Elias Disney fostered the spirit of creativity, innovation and excellence that continues to underlie all of the company's success.

Walt arrived in California in the summer of 1923 with dreams and determination, but little else. He had made a short film in Kansas City about a little girl in a cartoon world, called Alice's Wonderland, and he planned to use it as his "pilot" film to sell a series of these Alice Comedies to a distributor. On October 16, 1923, a New York distributor, M. J. Winkler, contracted to release the Alice Comedies, and this date became the formal beginning of The Walt Disney Company. Originally known as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, with Walt Disney and his brother Roy as equal partners, the company soon changed its name, at Roy's suggestion, to the Walt Disney Studio, which was initially housed in a succession of storefront buildings in Hollywood before becoming established on Hyperion Avenue.

Walt made his Alice Comedies for four years, constantly pushing the visual bounds – as well as the studio's finances – with innovative effects. In 1927, he decided to move to an all-cartoon series, and for its star he created a character named Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Within a year, Walt made 26 Oswald cartoons, but when he tried to get some additional money from Winkler for a second year of the cartoons, he found out that the distributor had gone behind his back and signed up almost all of his animators, hoping to make the Oswald cartoons in his own studio for less money without Walt. Since the distributor owned the rights to Oswald, there was nothing Walt could do. It was a painful lesson for the young cartoon producer. From then on, he saw to it that he owned everything that he made.

Walt now had to come up with a new character. With his chief animator, Ub Iwerks, Walt designed a mouse whom Walt first wanted to name Mortimer, but his wife Lilly preferred Mickey. And so a star was born. Ub animated two Mickey Mouse cartoons. But the first film with synchronized sound – The Jazz Singer – had premiered, and Walt decided that his studio should make the first sound cartoon. So, the studio poured all of its resources into a third Mickey Mouse cartoon before the first two were released, this one with fully synchronized sound. Steamboat Willie opened to rave reviews at the Colony Theater in New York November 18, 1928. Mickey Mouse was an immediate sensation around the world, and a series of Mickey Mouse cartoons followed.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Walt Disney soon produced another series -- the Silly Symphonies. Each of the films in this series featured different casts of characters, enabling the animators to experiment with stories that relied less on the gags and quick humor of the Mickey cartoons and more on mood, emotion, and musical themes. Eventually the Silly Symphonies turned into the training ground for all Disney artists, as they prepared for the advent of animated feature films. Flowers and Trees, a Silly Symphony and the first full-color cartoon, won the Academy Award for Best Cartoon for 1932, the first year that the Academy offered such a category. For the rest of that decade, a Disney cartoon won the Oscar every year. The most sensational one was released in 1933 -- Three Little Pigs. This was a breakthrough in character animation and provided something of an anthem for fighting the Great Depression – "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" The animated short was so popular, it sometimes was listed above the feature film on theater marquees.

Disney merchandising began in 1929 when Walt Disney was approached by a businessman interested in placing Mickey Mouse on the cover of a children's writing tablet. Disney Consumer Products and affiliates (DCP) extend the Disney brand to merchandise ranging from apparel, toys, home décor and books and magazines to interactive games, foods and beverages, stationery, electronics and fine art. This is accomplished through DCP's various lines of business which include: Disney Toys, Disney Apparel, Accessories & Footwear, Disney Food, Health & Beauty, Disney Home and Disney Stationery.

Disney Consumer ProductsDisney Publishing Worldwide (DPW) is the world's largest publisher of children’s books and magazines, reaching more than 100 million readers each month in 75 countries. Disney's imprints include Disney Libri, Hyperion Books for Children, Jump at the Sun, Disney Press, and Disney Editions.

Other businesses involved in Disney's consumer products sales are Disney Interactive Studios, developing and publishing interactive entertainment, and disneyshopping.com, the company's official shopping portal. The Disney stores retail chain, which debuted in 1987, is owned and operated by unaffiliated third parties in North America and Japan under a license agreement with The Walt Disney Company. Disney owns and operates the Disney Store chain in Europe.

My Cockatiel
(My Cockatiel name is Jaguar and he is 3 years old. He is very playful, loving and he always want to be with me.)

If hes out he use to fly straight to my keyboard and start typing.

Inside hes cage wondering whats going on, when i am taking photos of him.

My Jag loves hes swing if the swing fall down he used to chirp like mad.

About Cockatiel
The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), also known as the Quarrion and the Weiro, is the smallest and genuinely miniature cockatoo endemic to Australia. They are prized as a household pet throughout the world and are relatively easy to breed. As a caged bird Cockatiels are second only in popularity to the Budgerigar.

The only member of the genus Nymphicus, the Cockatiel has previously been considered a crested parrot or small cockatoo. However, more recent molecular studies have settled the debate. These indicate that the Cockatiel belongs in the Cockatoo Subfamily Calyptorhynchinae (commonly known as Dark Cockatoos). They are hence now classified as the smallest of the Cacatuidae (Cockatoo family). Cockatiels are natively found across the outback regions of inland Australia, and favour the Australian wetlands, scrublands, and bush lands.

Cockatiel Lifespan
The average lifespan of a cockatiel is 12 to 15 years. It is not unusual for a cockatiel to live to 20 years of age and the occasional cockatiel makes it to 30.

To insure your cockatiel has a long and happy life provide:
A clean cage.
Daily exercise.
A healthy diet including fresh fruit and vegetables offered daily
plenty of activity and companionship.

Cockatiel Health
In the wild if cockatiels let their guard down and show they are unwell they will become the victims of predators. Therefore it is natural for cockatiels to conceal their illness as long as possible.

By observing your cockatiel daily you will learn its normal behavior and anything out of the ordinary should draw your attention. If your cockatiel looks ill it normally means it is really sick and can deteriorate extremely quickly.

When you detect any of the following signs of illness you should take your cockatiel to an avian vet as soon as possible - try to visit a vet experienced with birds so a correct diagnosis can be given.

Signs of illness to watch out for:

Abnormal breathing
Abnormal droppings (note the quantity, color, consistency)
Abnormal feathers, feather growth, or molt.
Abnormal sleep pattern:
- continuous.
- both feet on the perch when normally one foot is tucked up.
- head tucked under the wing.
- head turned towards the wing with eyes only partly closed.
Any change in normal activities:
- talking or whistling.
- playing with toys.
- preening.
- interaction with other birds.
- interaction with humans.
- energy levels.
- different perching area.
Bleeding.
Discharge from the beak, eyes or nostrils.
Disorientation.
Drinking a lot more water than usual.
Drooping head, tail or wings.
Dull or swollen eyes.
Excessive feather picking or plucking.
Face and head feathers coated with mucus and semi-digested seed.
Falling off the perch.
Fluffed up appearance.
Hunched over posture.
Loss of appetite.
Lumps or swellings on the body.
Sitting on the bottom of the cage.
Soiled vent.
Tail constantly moving up and down.
Untidy appearance.
Vomiting.
Weight loss.

My Day at Manila Ocean Park

The Manila Ocean Park is intended to become "a marine themed park bringing together in one complex an Oceanarium, a mall, a restaurant row, boutique hotel, open water marine habitats and multi-purpose function facilities." The (8,000 square meters) oceanarium is said to be bigger than (6,000 square meters) Sentosa's Underwater World oceanarium in Singapore in terms of floor area but its 25-meters underwater acrylic tunnel is far shorter than Sentosa's 83-meters with moving travellator. The state-of-the-art Park had its soft opening last 29 February 2008.

The park has a huge lobby with huge photos of marine life to whet the appetite of visitors, and food stalls to fill the stomach too. Visitors make their way through a series of aquariums beside stairways and artificial waterfalls in a section named "Agos". There's a portion where visitors can touch some starfish. There are more marine life in the "Bahura" and "Laot" sections of the oceanarium. It's interesting that all the marine life in the entire park are found in Philippine seas. The underwater tunnel of the "Buhay ng Karagatan" section is the real feature of the tour. The stingrays are wonderful, like graceful birds flying in the water. You could almost touch the fish except for the glass that divides their world from ours. There are more sharks in the "Ang Kalaliman" section with an overhanging tank where you can see the bellies of various sharks. The multimedia facility has some interactive games.

The oceanarium is just the first phase of construction which will eventually include a hotel and mall, and open marine habitats. Already, it has the following sections open to visitors:
1. Agos (Flow) - a rainforest motiff complete with 8 tanks of freshwater fishes.
2. Bahura (The Reef) - exihibition of artificial corals in 48 tanks
3. Laot (Fishing Ground) - features big fish and Eagle-spotted rays in a long tank.
4. Kalaliman (The Deep) - showcases marine animals found in the deepest parts of Philippine waters.
5. Buhay na Karagatan (Living Ocean) - the main attraction of the oceanarium is a 25-meter long walkway tunnel with 220-degree curved acrylic walls similarly seen in Ocean Park Hong Kong, Singapore's Underwater World in Sentosa, Siam's Ocean World in Bangkok, Thailand and Kuala Lumpur's Aquaria in Malaysia.
6. Overhang Tank - variety of rays fly over while you're under this unique Overhang Tank.
7. Pating (Shark) - features several species of shark.

The Manila Ocean Park (MOP) is currently under construction behind the historical Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park.

Finally we have our own ocean park in the Philippines! I consider it very ironic that a country with one of the riches marine biodiversity does not have its own ocean park. I believe that having an ocean park will help educate the next generation and help raise the awareness of protecting the Ocean. I this as one of our greatest achievement as a nation.
